Handwriting

At St Mary’s school we use Nelson Handwriting Scheme and resources.
  • It provides clear guidance on developing a whole-school handwriting policy as required by Ofsted.
  • It develops children’s personal handwriting style to ensure they meet the ‘expected standard’ in the end of key stage writing teacher assessments.
  • It introduces letters in line with our phonics programme and includes pattern practice and motor skills work with three levels of adaptation to challenge and support our learners.
  • Models the correct formation on screen for the children to watch and mirror, allowing the teacher to watch the children and instantly correct any misconceptions.
  • It ensures continuity progression throughout the year groups and avoids repetition.
